I always preferred Mr Chisholm and Mr Jones to Mr Rycott and his sidekick. They were a great double act. Best line ever was when Jones refused to turn over a church because of his Welsh baptist views. Chisholm says 'One of these days Jones you'll need to decide if you're a Welshman or a policeman!'
Chisholm all the way. A brilliant nemesis for Arthur, if not under-used. Saw the episode where Arthur fakes his death and the scene at the end in the hotel. Jones is in the background corpsing at the brilliant acting of Cole and Malahide. He was a great foil to Chisholm as he seemed to be amused by Daley's scams. And I'm Welsh too, not enough Welsh characters on mainstream television!
Bizarrely I just watched an episode and it was about a bust up with Rycott v Chisholm! They were both staking out Arfur but didn't know the other was there, and they ended up crashing their cars into each other.
There was also a great scene where Taff got drunk at the Winchester Club!
Peter Childs' Rycott was a great character but Patrick Malihide and George Cole's performances together are a big part of why this is one of the best series ever made on British TV. Both are constantly acting and they never waiver. just thinking about Arfur and Cheerful Chalrie puts a smile on my face.
