Interesting synopsis. Just wanted to clear up a few things you mentioned... Gary didn't go to Miss Ellie because he was trying to make a success of his life WITHOUT going to his mother for once. There would have been no way he could have gone to Miss Ellie for $50,000 due to the mob involvement. Also, it's interesting to note that even though Gary needed $50,000, JR actually gave him $100,000. Also, if I remember correctly, during Abby's dinner scene, JR's comment about Mitch wasn't so much about money- JR said something like "Mitch is a big dummy because he'd rather do research instead of making big money, but I'll teach them a few things" or something like that, and the idea of JR influencing her daughter in any way would understandably send Val over the edge. And one of my favorite lines is when Karen convinces Val to go to Abby's dinner party by guessing that she'll be making hot dogs!
