What did they do for a living ?

Hi,

At first i thought Bo and Luke liked off illegal transportaton of wiskey made by their uncle Jess.

But then Jess woved to never make wiskey again. Were they farmers ? They helped uncle Jess around on the farm.

Bo eventually became a nascar driver.

Ironically I never questioned that due to them always on the run and dealing with this probation they had. I just knew that Jesse was most likely the farmer and of course Daisy worked at the Boars nest. Oddly with Boss Hogg feelings for the Dukes and always after their farm, you would think he wouldn't have allowed Daisy to work for him.

reply

I have a feeling Daisy worked For Boss Hogg so the Dukes could keep an eye on him and his shady dealings and Daisy could also alert her brothers if Boss Hogg was coming after them.

reply

Seeing how Daisy was a gorgeous woman who wore short-shorts and tight shirts, I can't imagine why Boss Hogg wouldn't want Daisy working for him!

reply

I hate to admit this but I never thought of this question until I saw it posted here.

I watched the show in it's first run on TV. I was young and single and I liked looking at Catherine Bach. I stopped watching after I became a married man LOL. The shows became a bit boring and I hated to see those classic cars being destroyed. I understand they went through quite a number of them. The one seen most on TV was never in any jump scenes.

reply

We used to joke about this back when we were kids. I Liked TDH but it was one of the many unanswered mysteries of the show.

reply

I never thought about it either, I guess the reason being it seems they're too busy being on the run and fighting the bad guys and chasing the crooks and then saving Boss Hogg's sorry ass every other week as well, TO have any regular work.

They worked on the farm, although what crops they grew was never specified. There would have been some income from that. They also took odd jobs from time to time, did some racing (there's money in that if you win) and Daisy worked for Boss Hogg. And they didn't have a very lavish lifestyle, so it's not like they needed a lot of money.

In "Money to Burn" (S1E11), they mention growing cotton and corn. Moonshine is typically made from corn, so they probably were producing liquor from their own crops before the boys were put on probation. There were also chickens and goats on the farm, which would save them grocery money and also provide income if they kept enough animals that they had excess eggs and milk to sell. An earlier episode also justified Bo and Luke's archery skills as necessary for hunting to supplement the family's food supply, which would further reduce their monetary costs (of course, those savings might have been eaten up buying all the dynamite that was regularly attached to their arrows... ;-)).

"Money to Burn" also implied that the boys regularly supplemented the farm income with racing winnings, since they were factoring expected winnings from an upcoming race into the budget. In the next episode "Route 7-11," they outright told Cooter that they couldn't leave the farm for "steady work," so farming was probably supposed to be their primary occupation. I wouldn't be surprised if the farm was part of the in-universe reason that Bo and Luke got their probation deal in the first place--Uncle Jesse likely played up the aspect that he was just an old man trying to keep the family farm going and he needed his strapping young nephews as farm labor.

My cousins live in rural Louisiana and they save quite a bit of money hunting and fishing. And like you say, a farm can provide income as well as food, and don't forget Daisy's wages, not to mention Uncle Jesse probably drew Social Security as a senior citizen.

Excellent theory. I think you're right.

Didn't they do some house painting?

I remember them singing and playing guitar in a bar at least once. That would have paid a few bucks.

reply

I think we can agree they just seem to be a couple jack of all trades, unlike Boss Hogg, who is just a jerk of all trades.

reply

We do see the boys taking on odd jobs on a fairly constant basis. Love the "jerk of all trades." 

Nothing. I am assuming that Uncle Jesse was old enough to be collecting Social Security so that is what paid the property taxes and the electric bill. The boys were good with a bow because they hunted for part of their food intake. Jesse probably grew a patch for "taters" and sweet corn and such. Yeah, the setting was a farm but there sure was very little going on there by the looks of the show. Jesse probably made a little hay for the livestock that was there. The boys bartered favors and did odd jobs for Cooter which was gas and drinking money. In any event what was shown on CBS was a surely sad depiction of what a farm should be. Even for an impoverished section of the South that farm seemed to have very little going for it. But to answer the OP's question the Duke's other than Daisy did not hold any kind of regular job.

Apparently they weren't "Good old boys, never meaning no harm" because according to today's thought police they apparently were Anglo-American supremacist, crack dealers that intended to decimate as many African Americans as they could.

And BTW, 'Thought Police' are nothing more than 'code words' meaning 'liberals' who are less liberal than today's conservatives. The leftists AKA 'liberals' of today are like pre/WWII Hitler Germany when was when the citizenry had to be careful about what they said. It's eerily similar here as it was there back then--'think and do as we want, or else we'll label you this or that.' I'm more than sick & tired of the leftist' lunacy and that's why I am supporting anyone but a democrat forevermore.

reply

First of all, Hitler was a Conservative Christian, who was anti-Communist, secondly, don't speak for all Liberals. I couldn't care less what happens to the Confederate flag. If it stays up, if it's taken down, if it gets reinstated. Doesn't mean I don't think the show should still be on. After all, Smokey and the Bandit still airs on TV.

And besides, people like you shouldn't take the show so seriously. I'm sure most of the people who worked on it, were/are Liberals in real-life.

reply

They were farmers but jack of alll trades to bring in extra cash.
