The very last episode of the series had Benson and the Govenor (as a third party candidate) in a race for the Statehouse. The series ended, and they never said who won the nail-biter election. I even tried sending a letter to the writers to see who they were going to name the next Govenor, but they never responded. Any ideas? Also, I think the series took place in Montana or New Mexico.
that was the point...they left it hanging on purpose...it sucks that they did that...but i think they were still hoping for one last year...I'm positive Benson himself prob won...the gov. did drop out in order to throw his support behind Benson...so it was just a race between Benson and the other guy...and the other guy was I think sen tyler--the crooked or shady guy whom Benson had clashed with on some previous eps....(i could be wrong about tyler being the other guy though) i think it was supposed to be some kind of viewer's choice thingie...but abc ended up cancelling it anyways so there you go
I wish TvLand would run the series in its entirity and stop pre-empting with movies that have been run on tv a thousand times already...just found out that this friday night which would have been Benson's final seven eps...has been bumped in favor of a re-airing of Fatal Attraction...what gives TvLand we were at the end of the series!!!!
I heard an interview recently with James Noble (Gov Gatling) and he said he thinks Benson probably would have ended up the winner. I think so too, personally.
Speaking of TV Land and how they suck - you would NOT believe how bad they are cutting up those Benson episodes. I have a good portion of eps from season 6 and just about all from season 7 from their ORIGINAL ABC airing and it's just insane.
They even cut the "SERIES RECAP" that aired right after the final episode concluded with "And the winner is..." - where you saw shots of Benson from 1979 (first arriving at the mansion), 1981 (being named Budget Director), 1984 (Winning the election for Lt. Governor) and 1986 (And the winner is...). God I hate modern TV.
I hated Benson for doing it at the time, but now I sort of see a 'peace' there - like it's still 'up in the air' - dunno - I feel completely different about it now. But, if it's true they shot 3 (or 4) different endings, I'd at LEAST like to be able to see what the others look like.
If you go to older threads you can find the answer
Supposedly during an iterview it was explained that apparently they filmed 3 different endings with all 3 characters winning in each.
1 With Gene gatling winning 1 with Benson winning and 1 with the third guy winning
According to the individual who posted, The director did not like the directions any of the cuts were headed, so He went with this alternate ending instead.
My guess is that they did not want to lose the Gene gatling character. At the same time they did not want to demote Benson.
They basically wrote themselves into a corner.
If I had to hazard a guess if the series was continued they would have aired out what they wanted to do.
Most likely Benson woul dhave won and gene gatling would ahve been given an Advisory role to allow him to stay on (However I have other ideas on that see My newest post which I am typing after this under a new topic)
I might be mixing it up with an earlier episode. But I could have sworn I saw the ending where Benson wins the election - he calls his brother, he's not home and say something to the effect of "I'm the Governor, he should be calling me".
Like I said, I could be wrong as to whether or not it was the series finale; but I'm positive I saw this episode/scene.
