That episode was very sad. He found her slipper, and started talking to it as if it were Edith. He treated her like crap for years. Calling her dingbat and telling her to shut up all the time. She took it in stride, and just dealt with it. One of my favorite episodes, I think it was in the original series, has her frequenting the bar. They love her there, and she is having a ball. She is playing the piano and having a grand time. Archie gets jealous and tries to drag her out of there. He says something like "lets go to that new place....we'll have a date night once a week" or something to that effect. Edith turns around and says "If for some reason Archie can't work it out, I'll be back!" Archie had always said, he was too busy, too tired, etc. to take out Edith. I thought that retort was priceless. As the seasons progressed, Edith stood up for herself in subtle ways. It's too bad Archie didn't appreciate her until she was literally gone. I believe Edith also got her way regarding Stephanie. In another episode, they went to deliver her to her father. It was a pathetic scene. He tried to extort money from the Bunkers because he knew they wanted her. Archie realized, almost too late, that Stephanie was better off with them. Archie realized that Stephanies father was a boozing loser and told Edith to collect Stephanie because they were going home. My memory may be fuzzy on this, but you get the idea......
"Real smooth, Cliff."
