What changed in the end? --Warning Spoilers

Before he goes back in time, he manages to save New Jersey, but doesn't stop the 2nd Missile, and then California goes to shit and Lois dies.

Then he travels back in time, we see all the damage repaired in reverse, and at some stage he stops.

But did he stop the 2nd Missile?
On one hand it looks like he did because Lois is alive and there's no damage,
but them you get Jimmy Olsen turning up thanking superman for leaving him stranded in the middle of no-where in an earth quake.

Good question. I’ve always wondered this as well.

I'm guessing it's a mistake on Richard Donnor's Part.

reply

Sounds like you stumbled upon a plot hole

A friend and I were just discussing this exact same thing.

Just watched it again tonight and that's why I stopped in!

We don't see it but I guess we're supposed to assume that once he's spun time back the first thing he does (before finding Lois) is stop the second missile.

So he's in two places at once. Pre time spinning, stops missile one. Post time spinning, stops missile two.

But then why do both Jimmy and Lois complain about Superman leaving them in the middle of an earthquake, gas station blowing up, telephone poles falling over the road, and so on?

reply

When I see a gaping plot hole in an otherwise tight story, I start to picture some dumb executive butting in and insisting on something.
