How old are they supposed to be?

I just finished watching the movie a few minutes ago. I was a really potent love story and I might watch a couple of times after this.

I'm curious to know how old George and Doris were when they first met? What was the age difference? Does anyone know?

Well towards the end of the movie they make a comment about Old man Chalmers, the groundskeeper. They say he must be at least 75 now. And how they called him that when they first started coming to the cottage and how they are the same age that old man Chalmers was back then. So I assume that they started their affair in their mid twenties and that they are both around 50 at the end of the movie./

They are about 60 by the end of the movie. 5 years earlier, before the end of the movie, she made reference to having been with her husband 27 years.

But, if she was 18 when she became pregnant and got married at that time- and was married for 27 years- that would make her 45 in the segment 6 years before the last segment. The last break is actually 6 and not 5 years- that makes her 51. I always had a feeling that George was a little older. The thing is, though, I am older than that and when I look at Doris at the end she seems older than 51. Her voice, looks, and mannerisms suggest to me that she is more 60ish- of course that is probably my sad attempt to feel young!

I think she was about 51 or 52 also..I'm 52 and I sure don't act like that. She acts like she's mid sixties..that's a problem I have with this movie. I guess the director was younger (who knows) and when you are young you think 50 is old. Anyway, that's my thought..
