The hetero Brokeback Mountain

I saw this film maybe 20 years ago on TV and was reminded of it when I saw Brokeback Mountain the other day. Although I enjoyed Brokeback Mountain, I have a feeling that its critical adulation is largely to do with it being a "brave", taboo-busting movie with Ang Lee's name attached to it. Although, to be fair, I would have to see Same Time, Next Year again before I could properly compare them.

I was also reminded of "Same Time, Next Year" when I saw "Brokeback Mountain". Each film has a loving couple who meet regularly for adulterous sex. Then they go back to their normal lives until the next rendezvous. Both movies touched me as beautiful love stories and I enjoyed both. I rented "Same Time, Next Year" this week and watched it again. It is still great!

I knew I wasn't the only one...
"Love's not about what you expect to get, only what you expect to give- which is everything."

Wow! This is SO weird! I was just trying to explain to some friends and family members how touched I was when I saw BBM and the only comparison that I could make was to STNY... (And here I was, thinking that I'd come up with some brilliantly unique comparison!) Both movies ripped my heart out and made me ache for the characters who clearly should have found each ohter first and/or been allowed to love each other in public.

Obviously, some people might have stronger feelings about homosexuality than they did about "standard" audultery back then, but who knows how social mores can change in 30 years? To the average person today, STNY probably has very little sting with regards to the cheating part of the storyline, whereas BBM is filled with controversy. Hopefully, in 30 years from now, we'll be able to appreciate ANY deep and emotional love story, regardless of it's social agenda.

Going back to Same Time Next Year, I really recommend this movie to EVERYONE... It's a funny, shocking, inspiring love story and, for all you history buffs, it also is a pretty cool review of political and pop-culture changes from the forties through the seventies.

Enjoy!

Oh, I was JUST thinking that!! I really did love Brokeback, and think that Ang Lee made a beautiful movie, subtle in many ways, not preachy or heavy-handed. STNY is an all-time favorite.

Eloquent comparisons between "STNY" and "BBM," everyone! The two films show how the lovers' relationships developed over the years, though one used more comedy and the other used more tragedy. They both also made terrific uses of their locales. Maybe we could combine the two and call it "Ennis and Doris and George and Jack." Uh ... scratch that thought!

I saw it last night, and that was the first thought in my mind!!
