I'm pretty certain it was filmed in or near Gualala, California along the Mendocino coast. Alan Alda even says they are staying along the Mendocino coast when he is calling a doctor as Burstyn is about to give birth. I've driven along the 1 and am certain I drove right past the hotel and saw the cliff area where they filmed the last scene that is filmed from the back of the hotel/lodge they stayed in. Gualala is about halfway between SanFran and Ft. Bragg.....maybe a bit closer to Bragg.

It was filmed at Heritage House in Little River, California. It is a resort on the Pacific Coast about 4 miles south of Mendocino. The cabin in the film is still there and my wife and I stay in it when we visit. The cabin is actually now two rental rooms called "Same Time" and "Next Year".

Yes, indeed, it was filmed at Heritage House, not the Highlands Inn in Carmel (which is pricey but isn't in this quaint style at all -- more 60s/70s minimalist in wood). Here's the web site for the Heritage House where the movie was filmed:

Wow thankyou for that info on the rooms!! I love this movie for very personal reasons and having that info makes me really want to go stay there!!

My wife and I have always loved this movie and consider the setting one of the most beautiful in all of movies. We had the opportunity a couple of years ago to stay at Heritage House and fulfill a dream of ours to walk out on the peninsula where the last scene in the movie takes place. Heritage House and the view of grounds and the Pacific are just as stunning now as in the 1978 movie. We stayed in the "same time next year" cottage which has been split into two rooms. The floor plans have been altered to accomdate this duplex setup but one walk out onto the balcony and you think you're in the movie.

According to the personnel at Heritage House, only the exteriors of the cottage on the grounds were used in the movie. The interiors were shot on a sound stage.

It has reopened now but doesn't mention anything about the movie. And the rooms look sterile and modern.
