If they did a remake, who would.....

Me and a few friends were talking about this for some reason, and trying to think of who would be a good cast.

I feel Rachel McAdams would be perfect as Doris, but couldn't really think of a good George. I think that Paul Rudd would do ok, Jim Carrey would do ok, and I couldn't really think of anyone else. Let me know what you think.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger.

There's a movie just out called "One Day" with Anne Hathaway which sounds similar but not as good.

reply

Yes, I read a review of "One Day" that referenced this film. I'll stick with "Same Time, Next Year."

It shouldn't be remade (most good films shouldn't). I really doubt anyone can do it better than Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn. They had good chemistry which was evident on screen. Most actors these days don't have the range to simulate that kind of chemistry to a believable level.

reply

Who knows, and more importantly, who cares? They shouldn't remake this movie... don't ruin the magic of another one, Hollywood!

reply

They couldn't remake this movie because it wouldn't translate to now. I guess if they remade it covering the same years it could work, but it wouldn't be as good as the original so why bother. However, if they attempted to remake the film and translate it to now then it couldn't work because the culture is so different. Now it just wouldn't seem believable that two people would continually see each other once a year for an affair and remain married to whom they were married to. I'm not saying it is impossible, but people just seem to get divorced more easily these days then in the time the film was made and was about.

reply

There is too much technology to make it impossible to keep that kind of secret.
A man going to the same hotel every year alone for even 5 years would raise an eyebrow in any wife. She'd find out.
NOpe, don't redo it...no one wants it, Hollywood.

It is simply a movie that shouldn't be remade. It is an absolute gem as it is.

I think there is a remake in the works. Can't fathom why?

There is a remake of sorts...well, I suppose re-imagining would be more apt. It's called One Day and it has Anne Hathaway. It really stuck in my craw when I heard about that movie and everyone or it would seem everyone is saying it's a totally new concept for a movie. No it's not! Watch Same Time, Next Year!

-every time they see an old film.

This film, like many, many others, doesn't need a remake. It would be different if it had been filmed during the silent era and there were no sound version. But films are not made just so that someone can do a remake twenty or thirty years later.

reply

I'm unsure about the cast but I would like to see an updated remake of this film. I don't mind remakes as long as their done well.

As to it being hard to believe that today a spouse wouldn't catch on quickly, I am sure the writers could find some way around that.

Steve Carell and Meryl Streep.

It would have to be an edgy remake to appeal to a new generation of movie goers. Sure, the agents will have to work hard, but the box office could explode if an edgy remake starred:

Russell Brand and Katie Perry

Sparks will definitely fly but edgy nonetheless. The tension will be just so palpable big time.

If Russell and Katie aren't available, then:

Brad and Jennifer.

This would earn $100 million on the opening weekend no doubt.

Another edgy casting pairing:

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

How about:

Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern?
