Same Time, Next Year in the film Ordinary People

There is a scene in Ordinary People where Mary Tyler Moore and Donald Sutherland attend a stage production of Same Time Next Year. Sutherland falls asleep as the on stage character of George remarks on calculating the number of times they have made love. I'm guessing it's supposed to be an amateur production as the actor playing George hams it up badly for the audience.

Well, it was a community theater production and Calvin and Beth probably did know the actors personally...as a matter of fact when Calvin and Beth go to the party at the Murrays, the guy playing the actor in SAME TIME NEXT YEAR is glanced for one moment at the party, sitting in a chair looking very bored.

I have seen Ordinary People so many times but I never had a clue as to what play that was. Thanks for filling me in.

Methinks this was Robert Redford's way of paying tribute to Robert Mulligan -- Redford played Natalie Wood's boyfriend in Mulligan's Inside Daisy Clover.
