still just beautifully rendered and potent...

i am sitting here working on the computer and caught the last five minutes or so of the last scene (on turner classics) and it still hits me right where i live-- after all these years. i was a 12 or 13 when i first saw this on hbo and fell in love with it. i am reminded that it is truly one of my all time favorite movies. i am happy to know too that at 41 years old and after all this time, a beautifully rendered movie can still make me hopeful about love and romance. i can't describe how light i feel right now from watching just five minutes of this movie and the subsequent memories that it unleashed.

I caught about the second half of it. I will be 31 next month and I feel the same way about this movie that you do. I know it is not Neil Simon but this play AND screenplay (written by the same author) reeks of him and yet is still unique. I got so sentimental that I just ordered it off of b and n. My fiance and I, when we first started to date, watched this one afternoon. He had never seen it but I had, and also had read the play. We still love to watch it.

that's cool that you turned your boyfriend on to it. it is truly really sweet.

i agree. it is reminescent of a neil simon play. i think it may have to do with 'when' the play was written (during the 70's- simon's heydey). i think it speaks to simon's influence as a playwright and pop figure. insipid (as some people think he is) or not, he has had an affect. there are other plays that have a similar feel from that time.

watching it makes it really easy to be nostalgic. btw, i will probably buy it too, as soon as i can.

hey, also, that movie made me a huge ellen burstyn fan. you might want to try resurrection, also starring sam shepherd. it is way darker, but man, what a performance!

I too fell in love with this movie as a teenager watching on HBO. I'm 38 now and whenever I read or see something with Burstyn in it I get all misty-eyed about it. I guess I'm a sucker for the whole "Love Transcends All" theme.

She has 2 other sleepy little movies that I'm fond of, The Spitfire Grill and Walking Across Egypt. In both she plays a rather dottering older woman who takes in a young adult with boat-loads of emotional baggage.Somehow she makes both roles fresh and interesting.

yeah, i guess i'm pretty much a sucker too. although, in my defense, there are few things left in this world that make me feel all warm and fuzzy. so i'm pretty happy to take it where i can get it.

I'm 19 and I watched this movie for the first time today and really enjoyed it. I rarely watch movies older than myself (i know, gasp!) and this one restored my faith that there are older movies actually worth watching. Same Time Next Year is a timeless story (minus the hairstyles lol). I'm definitely looking forward to getting the DVD.

if you are interested, there are quite a few movies that may restore your faith in older films. there is no real rush. let yourself be surprised. i wish i could readily make recommendations, but nothing comes to mind. wait... i know! what about 'foul play' w/ goldie hawn? maybe even 'private benjamin'.

come to think of it, when i was little (5 or 6 or so), i remembered 'the prime of miss jean brodie' getting so much press. i rented the dvd of it very recently (never saw it as a kid) and it was beautiful. i got all the hype (in retrospect, of course). maggie smith is so underrated as an actress. i honestly felt lucky to have gotten to watch it.

This is a lovely little film that does make you feel warm all over when it's over. No doubt about it.

Yes, truly wonderfully enjoyable film. Much like "The Goodbye Girl". You should check out "The Notebook", too. "The Lake House" is another similar feel good movie.

I really like this movie. Ellen Burstyn is so beautiful and talented. It's interesting that a movie about adultery is still sweet and endearing. Normally this is not so. Alan Alda is wonderful in this. Such a lovely film.
