a few words......

its bloody amazing. this movie hasn't seen release on dvd yet and already there's a dozen or so people here talking about it. talking about films that remind them, films that mean something to them, that mean something to somebody else. this film personally has not changed me one iota since seeing it but that doesn't mean it doesn't hold a special place in somebody else's mind. who they were with when they first saw it, what they were wearing or what they ate after they saw it, what happened to them the day after, or the day before. most movies, unfortunately, are like that.
its obvious ROMEO MUST DIE, GIRL 6, and JEEPERS CREEPERS were not designed to educate, inform, or alter lives, the only reason they exist, ladies and gentlemen, were because a few people had a few ideas and decided to get together, make a couple of pictures and entertain. i can sit here and tell you how powerful THE PAWNBROKER with Rod Steiger was and what redeeming social truths and values that film had, but it wouldn't mean half as much to me (or anybody else, i hope) to sit here and tell you what happened to me the night I rented DUDE, WHERES MY CAR? or ONE NIGHT AT MCCOOL's for example. the friends that came over, the jokes we cracked, the phone calls we made. it seems ridiculous but over 100 years ago there was no Hollywood, no star system, no oscars, and (go forbid!) no imdb. could you imagine?
i'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of the men and women of all races, creeds, colors who came together to put on a show just for the hell of it. to put on shows and entertain folks like us, who need a good 2 hour break from this nightmare called life. to show us a good time for a few bucks. people who made it their business (now matter how "untalented" they really were and are) to break their backs every night to see to it that folks like us had a few laughs, a few tears, maybe a chill up the spine, or just an excuse to get out of the frickin house. with all the bloodshed, greed, and injustice on this godforsaken planet we need somebody up in that screen or on that stage to tell it like it is, or how it should be. to remind us of things we forgot, to show us places weve never been to. or maybe just to make us piss our pants and gag at the same time. here's to the entertainers, living and dead. these are the notables who come up in conversation and get REACTIONS out of people, even if the reaction is no reaction at all. i betcha even the good lord himself likes a good chuckle every now n' then.
so, in short, as long as there's that someone at the office who makes it just a little easier for us by telling a joke they heard, or that cd you just bought you can't wait to get home to listen to, or that pat on the back you got from your best friend just for being a friend, i think were gonna be ok. i hate to sound cliche, but i really believe in the deepest corners of my cinema-stricken heart, i think were gonna be ok.

If my grandpa were to read this, I think he'd break down in tears. He co-wrote this movie, and it's one of his favorite things he ever wrote.

I'll tell you this: It was better than the remake (Grindhouse).
