Was it Hopkins or was it Dennis Alwood who did the voice of fats?

After watching the DVD I am unclear as to who exactly did the voice of fats in the film, the credits state Hopkins but on the extras Dennis Alwood pulls out Fats and starts doing the exact voice you hear in the film....if he trained Hopkins in the voice and Anthony simply mimicked Alwood, well that doesn't sound like something Hopkins would do as a method actor (or at least an actor who clearly immerses himself totally in a role as Anthony has been known to do) I would think he would want his own take on Fats, did Alwood mimic Hopkins? Who was it in the end? Both?

I believe, and I hope, it was Anthony Hopkins. I think the voice of Fats sounds like Dennis Alwood because that's how he trained Hopkins to speak. Or, as you say, Alwood could be a master of impersonation and was "doing" Hopkins as Fats. But all I know is what's on the DVD. Anyone else?

I'm pretty sure it was Anthony Hopkins. Dennis Alwood's voice 4 Fats in the DVD sounded different from Fats in the movie. Also on the DVD, Anthony Hopkins does a interview with a Spanish guy and talks in Fats' voice.

i remember an interview Richard Attenborough did around the time the film was released and he said that Anthony Hopkins learned ventrilogism and did the voice of fats.

it was hopkins for sure but i read somewhere that on scenes when it was physically impossible for him to do both voices (like at the end when he is practically having a break down) then Alwood did the voice. Something like that, but for the majority if not all of it - it is Hopkins.

"May I see your credentials?"
