I have to admit, I wanted to learn the card trick Corky uses to get Peggy into bed.
Turns out, in the real world, magic's not so great for getting dates. I also learned that there are much better ways to present that particular trick than Corky's psycho/needy presentation.
Anyone else get interested in magic, or maybe just in that particular card trick, after seeing this movie?

The trick does work. A friend of mine did it for me a while back. She‘s never seen the movie. She showed me how it was done and its pretty easy. Then I saw Magic on AMC a couple weeks ago and when that scene was happening... I was like Heeeyyyy I know that trick. But when me friend showed it to me it didn’t turn me on or anything…… But I must admit, anyone who can do any kind of magic is pretty impressive and quite intriguing.

It's a trick, even within the movie. Fats tells Peggy he "spots the bottom card," and goes on to say Corky's used the trick to seduce other girls. That doesn't completely expose the method, but it's enough to let Peggy know it wasn't real mindreading.
It just seems like real magic because it's a very good trick and Corky's a very good magician.
For what it's worth, I just saw the DVD and it inspired me to revive the trick, and it impressed my own wife (magicians' wives are notoriously difficult to fool and even more difficult to impress). I didn't get all intense about it, like Corky did, but it was still effective.
By the way, I won't reveal the name of the trick (that'd make it too easy to find online), but I have, since starting this thread, come across the best presentation for it.
It's not mind-reading. Why switch the decks and shuffle and everything if it were?
Instead, present it as happenstance - do exactly what the other person is doing. If the spectator drops a card while shuffling, make it a point to drop a card yourself (it's a cute gag, gets a small laugh).
The trick is presented as almost a joke. Then, at then end, when the cards match, it's truly stunning.
