Interesting bit of trivia on Magic

I saw this on wikepedia, regarding the film. Interesting bit of trivia.

In 1978, Ann-Margret co-starred with Sir Anthony Hopkins in the horror/suspense thriller Magic. Ann-Margret appeared partially unclad in the film, which involved a steamy nude love scene between her and Hopkins. This was only the second time she ever consented to appear nude. She required the scene to be shot on a closed set with the minimum number of persons present during filming. Additionally, no stills were shot of the scene. Subsequently, High Society Magazine published a picture taken from the nude scene, an action which would lead to a lawsuit.

Loosely translated: Infamously this was the only time Ann Margret's breasts ever appeared on celluloid. Stills printed without her consent in High Society magazine led to a court case for invasion of privacy which she eventually lost.

The court held that Ann-Margret had no right of publicity in the film's release. There was no evidence regarding the extent of her release in relation with Magic; and the court considered her nudity to be "newsworthy"; the court considered Ann-Margret's nonownership in the copyright to be an important element; and the court considered High Society to be only a "tacky" publication.

Oddly enough, both Sir Anthony Hopkins and Ann-Margret(despite their attraction for each other)were notably shy. One aspect of this shyness manifested itself during the shooting of the film. Anthony Hopkins and Ann-Margret were required to enact a fairly explicit nude love scene. The mutual shyness between them was apparently so bad that Hopkins stormed off set and had to be persuaded to come back and finish the job, so to speak.

that's really sweet. you can see his shyness in films overall in that period...i don't think he was comfortable...now when i see him he has the same effect of michael caine...old movie whores. that was a sweet story! thanks for sharing.

Doncha know me Jim? I'm not Margret, I'm Edie. I didn't kill Frank DeLorca.

I think I remember seeing her in her birthday suit in "Carnal Knowledge". I haven't seen it in years but that kind of image pretty much stays with you for life.

reply

yeah, probably cause they're real...that's all i can surmise....cause i'm a chick and i'm pretty sure I saw them in CK too!

This film was also under-rated at the time, and didn't do well at the box office BUT I'm convinced it was because of very misleading trailers to the film. People went to this film (including me) thinking this dummy would really come to life (like Chucky in Child's Play). If they hadn't had those ridiculous trailers I think this film would have been more successful. Now after re-watching it 31 years later I LOVE it, it's a great film, and Anthony Hopkin's performance is outstanding.

I don't think this was the first time Ann-Margret's breasts were on film. She appeared nude in "Carnal Knowledge"(1971), "C.C. and Company"(1970), and "R.P.M."(1970). In CK and CC&Company you never get a full view of her breasts, it was either from the side or a glimpse during a love scene. But I think in RPM you could see everything. Maybe they meant like a really good look at them. Because in CK and CC&Company you really couldn't see much.

I find Ann-Margret and Anthony Hopkins shyness the cutest thing ever! They had great chemistry thru out the movie and its one of my favorite horror movies of all time. This and The Shinning!

If memory serves (and it has been a while since I have seen this), you could see a whole lot of her nude in Carnal Knowledge.
