They do this often in many plays, shows, and movies. It is done to advance the plot or to give a point.
No matter where you go there will always be critics.
This scene is some of the best acting I have ever seen in any film. When he says he is not going to make it...yikes.

shareIt was to show how far gone he really was. To a normal sane person it would be no sweat but the fact that he was dependent on "Fats", that first minute seemed like a lifetime.
