When and how did you first see Magic?

I first saw this movie late at night on AMC (they made a mistake and accidentally showed a decent movie), October 2003. I wish I remembered the exact day, but perhaps I'm being too sentimental. I'd love to hear how the rest of you first came across this great film.

Around 1983, on tv late one saturday night. That dummy & the harmonica tinged music scarred me for life, but I still watch it at least once every couple of years. Hopkins is just a tour-de-force and the 'stay quiet for 5 minutes' scene one of the greatest in movie history imo. Awesome film.

On Svengoolie (Chicago-area UHF show that shows monster movies on Saturday nights) back in High School.

Back when it came out I sneaked into the cinema (underage) and was virtually on my own in there.
On the big screen, I remember being terrified by it - but watched it again on the TV last night and, on that medium, it loses some of its effect.
Definitely best seen in the cinema.

In the early 90's on TBS.

Okay, so this thread is so old I'm not sure anyone's watching any more, but I just saw this film on DVD for the first time in...well, since the first time, so I thought I'd check out the IMdB on it.

While I was aware of it being on general release, I believe the first time I saw this was on TV, probably 1980, and seeing it again was quite something. For a start, I'm not convinced that the first time I saw it (possibly on HBO) the first scene with Hopkins and his mentor was even in it. I get the feeling that it opened with Burgess Meredith taking David Ogden Stiers to the show. Maybe I just missed the beginning, but if anyone knows if the TV version was butchered like that, let me know.

I do remember seeing the "banned" TV ad - I didn't realise it had been banned until I read this, but it was very spooky. Great film - I watched it with a bunch of people who'd never even heard of it and everyone was very impressed.

I saw this a year or two ago, and on DVD from Netflix. I need to get the Blu-ray.
