Why not just take the psych. exam??

I mean you don't have to tell them that you are psychologically attached to the dummy and interact with it as if it were a living being....so, what can go wrong?

I know, they probably are good at using trickery to try and get you to say something that they feel can be useful. I'm sure they do that but still he could just be careful, act cool and calm, right?

Maybe, but they probably would have noticed he something wrong with him.

Y'know, I could eat a peach for hours

He couldn't last without being Fats for 5 minutes in front of his manager, so i doubt he could take the pressure of an examination, well obviously he felt he couldn't anyway.

It's the principle. And there's just no tellin' how married to principle a bonkers guy like that is.

I was going to ask the same thing, so you have just saved me time.

My point of view is that medical examinations are usually physical. You will only have to chit chat the doctor / nurse and answer their questions about your medical history. All in all, it's probably only red tape and a nuisance. But who knows? Maybe he realises that he's going crazy and knows that he'll be a nervous wreck.

On the other hand, the conversation he had with the taxi driver was cool and funny, so he kinda is able to present himself as a non-crazy guy.

I don't know if there was even a psychological exam back in those days. These days there's not either. It seems he'd been evaluated before and maybe he thought it was in some database the doctor would find out. But generally speaking, you're right...it's mainly to know if he won't croak from a heart attack for insurance purposes. A lucrative contract needs to know you are healthy to earn money. Excellent point. You could almost submit that as a "goof" or plot hole for the movie, "Mental health is widely disregarded in the entertainment industry so it is unlikely that Ben would be so tenacious about Corky receiving a psych. eval." Hah.

I think "mental health" had a negative stigma in the 70's, and I can see why he was reluctant back then.

Once someone has become a star, then you could say nobody cares about their mental health. But when a studio is hiring a new unknown, yes they do put them through various examinations for insurance purposes. I don't know about actual psych evals, but jeez, it's just a movie. Call it artistic license. =P
