Smaug's voice

I thought richard boones's voice was perfect.

Yes! Casual, calm, confident. He didn't have to strain for macho; he had the strength, and the willpower to restrain himself. A good example of a dragon. I was almost sorry to see him (Spoilers!) die.

Tenser, said the Tensor.
Tension, apprehension, and dissension have begun.

reply

agreed, 100 percent. his tone conveyed the sort of attitude you'd expect from a dragon laying atop a pile of gold and jewels, complacent and arrogant, his anger at being intruded upon only restrained by his curiosity about the burglar in his house...

I enjoy any Tolkien movie adaption but this I knew would fall wayyyyy short of smaugs voice from this. Its quite epic to me. Loved this movie from childhood n his speech is jus spot on great!

They were good, but American accents do not belong in fantasy in any way, shape or form.

And who came up with that rule Starwarsfan?

Can you quack like a duck when you suck?

reply

Hmmm, I disagree, though I did think Richard Boone sounded s bit like a grizzled cowboy. At the time the film was made, if we were picking an American voice I could imagine Henry Fonda.

reply

He was good but Cumberbatch is the best Smaug.

Because he's not a hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight.

reply

Starwarsfan must of really had a problem with this movie all the leads were American even the composer of the music was an American.

But to the point of the OP I thought Richard Boone was perfect for Smaug's voice even better then Cumberbatch.

The thing is that it's not really fair to compare the voices because Cumberbatch's voice is heavily digitally modulated, whereas Boone's voice is simply his. Both do a good job, but let's be honest here, Cumberbatch's is intimidating because it is enhanced.

reply

I thought it was enhanced to sound more like Boone's.
