DVD version with the sound effects intact?

Watching this on DVD was a very upsetting experience for me as it's missing so many of the sound effects I vividly remembered from my youth (like when the Goblin king gets hit by the sword, etc.).

A) What happened? Did they forget to process a track on the stereo mixdown?

B) Is there a DVD that has everything audio-wise as it was on the ol VHS version?

reply

A while back someone mixed the VHS audio with the DVD video. The result is named "The Hi-Fi Hobbit", which can be found online wherever movies aren't sold. As for an official retail version, we might have to keep waiting.

I'm shocked that there hasn't been a petition, especially with the total disaster I saw in the theater a few weeks ago calling itself "The Hobbit". You would think some purists would start to surface energized about seeing the definitive version of The Hobbit in its full glory?

We don't need that. You can get the definitive version of "The Hobbit" almost anywhere... where books are sold.

is that like one of those really long magazines with no pictures?

Depends which edition you get. I think they all have maps at least.

It's funny though. I bought the first edition DVD, and it seemed to have everything in it, but when I streamed it from Amazon last month, not only was the aspect ratio wrong, but there were Sound Effects and musical cues missing.

I wonder why they did that.
