What’s the appeal of this? What makes it so special?

Watching it now, it’s certainly not the storyline, which besides from the twist of Sandy attending the school, is very weak.

I’d say it’s the songs and characters, plus 50s nostalgia.

What do you think it is?

Oh and Travolta is no doubt a superstar in this movie.

Songs are good, simple as that really.

You're right, the plot of Grease is fairly non-existent. But it's a musical, you don't need much of a plot if the songs are good. The songs were fun, for the most part.

It all looks a bit camp nowadays, and you can have laugh watching some of the over-the-top dance moves in the background to some of the scores. But you know you'll be singing along too.

It's just all a bit of fun , really.

Actually one reason I loved the movie's "the over-the-top dance moves" it's make the musical different than any movie I remember. Also some of Travolta over the top move are the most memorable.

For me it was the music and Olivia Nutronbomb

I hate this movie always have, but as you put it Olivia Nutronbomb makes it easier to watch than most movies that I hate. I actually like watching Xanadu, but I hate Grease. Olivia was at her hottest in Xanadu. She was on fire in that crapfest. Although I have to admit the music in Xanadu was awesome. ELO all the way.

BTW I am now referring to Olivia as Olivia Nutronbomb- thank you very much!

reply

You're welcome. That's what we used to call her when Grease came out. Yes Xanadu was a good one as well.

I absolutely love it. It describes her perfectly. She and Cheryl Ladd are probably two of my favorite (to look at) actresses ever. I'm young enough to be their son though. Oh well...

The incredible songs, the era, Travolta at his best, and Olivia looking and sounding great. This film has tons of great energy. Unlike Grease 2, which is more like a dying gasping fish out of water.
