Why did they cast a bunch of 30 year old Italian and Jewish actors from NYC?

This movie is supposed to be set in a high school in a lily white waspy suburb of Los Angels during the 1950's. Why did they cast a dozen 30 year old Italian and Jewish actors from NYC to play high schoolers from California???

reply

You are correct. Most of the main and supporting actors were from the New York area. John Travolta was from Englewood, NJ, about ten miles west of NYC. The late Jeff Conaway, Stockard Channing, Didi Conn, Dinah Manoff and Michael Tucci were all New Yorkers. Jamie Donnelly like Travolta was from North Jersey.

California? Really LOl ... I always thought it took place on the East coast because of the accents .. :)

I think the original musical was set in Brooklyn.

They changed the story to California to make it easier to film. They added The Australia angle because of Olivia Newton John.

The original musical was set at fictional Rydell High School, which was based on William Howard Taft School in Chicago.

I believe the musical was set in Chicago.

Because they could sing and dance.

Because unlike today- back then the most important thing was not age or race. It was talent.

reply

What? Lol did you think the cast overall was so incredibly talented that people should overlook how non age appropriate they are? And what does race have to do with it? The fact more actors of color are getting roles that weren't written solely for minorities really proves you wrong.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

Most of the cast looked too old for the part.

reply

Cha Cha was super hot but yes, you could tell she was in her 30s.

Was 19 during the filming, so she was the youngest, also why isn't Lorenzo Lamas listed as a cast member?

reply

Older movies notoriously had older actors because of the content of the movie and the fact that they didn't have to deal with actors being tutored or in school at the time. Present day, it's still done, but that's usually when the movie contains nudity and the actors have to be over 18 for that. I'd say acting experience plays a part, too, but that's a guess on my part.

-Oh, that? One of my patients. He's...sick.
-Will he live?
-It's looking grim.
