Kojak , 'Bang Bang!'

I really liked when Gloria was trying to calm the old Chinese couple down and she said .."It's okay he's a police officer .. like Kojak .. bang, bang" ... then the old chinese man was really into it and said "Kojak .. Bang, BAng!!" .. then he and his wife were really excited and enjoyed the rest of the ride ..

They were Japanese, I think, and they are the funniest part of the whole film. I saw this in the theater as a kid, and I'm now 42, and I still laugh out loud at that old couple.

This is a classic moment. Goes to show how funny "funny" can be before we had political correctness.

I like the movie and don't think any malice was intended. But I think the development of the "PC era" has been a good thing overall.

Me too! I was 9 or so...I remember this scene so clearly, and laughing my butt off. It was very cute.

I'm still smiling after watching it tonight! That couple had me cracking up so hard!! They were adorable with their big smiles, while waving the little American flags. Awesome!

Anyhow, I was thinking about how much fun that scene had to be when they shot it. Imagine the crew laughter that was being muffled. The Asian couple was, probably, truly busting a gut...'cause once you get going, laughter can take you over.

The couple are definitely Japanese. They had JAL bags, they were saying some things in Japanese, and the actor's/actress'es names were Japanese.

I found the scene funny and enjoyable. Being a Japanese, it wouldn't have been so fun for me had the Chevy character made a derogatory comment or something, but he doesn't. (His detachedness works well in this and other scenes in the film.) And then the Goldie character, even though they're in a rush to stop an assasination, takes the time to say "It was so nice to meet you..."! Hilarious. Such things make the difference in the taste of the movie.

There were so many characters that could have been treated with condescension, but they never crossed the line. The "far out" cowboy is another of my favorites.

Taking some notes here, let me get this down... insensitive and mean-spirited portrayal of foreigners as dimwitted buffoons... perfectly OK as long as the actors in the film are polite towards them.... Got it, thanks! =P

You are the one calling them dimwitted buffoons. I didn't see them that way at all.
