the beat that my heart skipped

so apparently there's a french remake of fingers being released by that name (the beat that my heart skipped), at least on the east coast, this week in theaters. looks pretty awesome. i never saw the original, but judging from the trailer of the remake, the soundtrack should be shaping up pretty nicely as well. if anybody has more info on the remake (specifically the music on it), a post would be appreciated.

I know that in the trailer for "The Beat That My Heart Skipped," one of the songs is Monkey 23 by The Kills.

I saw "The Beat" last weekend, and rented and saw Fingers (for the first time) since then. The new French adaptation is quite good, IMO. (And I'm generally not too happy with recent French attempts to duplicate the American thriller style.) Most of the substantial plot changes seem well-motivated and work out well. The scheduling of the audition worked for a lot more build-up in the French version, and the entire new story line about the Chinese piano tutor was excellent. I'm not sure why the new version had his mother deceased.

I recently heard Toback interviewed on the radio (probably on Fresh Air) and he was very positive about The Beat. At a minimum, it has resurrected public interest in Fingers! But he also endorsed their script adaptations.

we should be thankful that it happened this way around - the americans make such bad versions of european films so it's rewarding that even when they do it after the americans the better version is the european version -
(let's see - what springs to mind? ... 'the scent of a woman' - 'three men and a baby/a cradle' - ' la cage aux folles/the bird cage' - 'the vanishing')
well, let's face it; the idea of the american movie making machine doing something as good as the class that is european film making is absurd ...and yet they keep trying!

Not sure but doesn't the main character in "Beat" watch a bit of fingers on tv during the movie???

Am I seeing stuff??

reply

No, that movie was a great old British film called "Dead of Night" (1945?) which featured three or four different creepy short stories which built up to a climax which we saw on TV.

the remake is very good. i haven't seen the original in a long time but i will soon. ending is more depressing in toback's version.

Saw Beat, then fingers a few months later. IMO Beat is much much better. Better storyline, better ending, better acting, more charm. All the characters I didn't like from fingers were omitted in the remake and some of the scenes that made me wince e.g. that dude knocking the girls heads together. Fingers seemed like a amateur b-movie to me. Just my opinion, but then I'm European.

Fingers has always been one of my favourite movies cause I like the emotional ones, like Midnight Cowboy for instance.

Beat was better as a movie and I think Romain Duris did very well but Keitel is less accesible as a character thus in my opinion slightly better. Gazzo easily outperforms Arestrup.

Anyway I love this remake.
Salut mr. Audiard, tres bon!

I've seen both and Fingers is pretty raw and very 70s. The remake TBTMHS, is more classy, tighter, and while I liked it better than Fingers, I liked Harvey Keitel. He's just a better actor -more expressive, intense, etc, which was needed in this role of conflicts.

Agreed. I just saw "Fingers", and although I found it to be a pretty nice film, I think TBTMHS is far better. Not just the storyline's changes, but the great soundtrack and awesome acting, give the story a great new edge. Plus, as it was said before, the lame scenes and few poor-quality shots from "Fingers" have been either improved, or supressed.

Still, I think Thomas Seyr's room shoulnd't be so full of musical equipment, as it was in Keitel's version. Maybe it's only an homage.

Anyway, "The Beat..." is one of my all time favourite movies.

i've seeen fingers a few more times so i lean towards a preference for that film but i'm not too stuck up to deny the TBTMHS is an awesome movie too and a great remake.
