The scene with Dreems and the two girls was so stupid, drawn out, and gratuitous. What WAS the point? To show what a stud the character was, to flaunt it in front of Jimmy? The head bashing was even worse. Thankfully this whole part of the film was left out of the remake The Beat My Heart Skipped.

I didn't enjoy them either, but it would have been way harder figuring out what was going on without it. And they also add more depth.

Dreems probably invites Jimmy to show to the girls that he himself is the ultimate alpha male. Plus having Jimmy's detached, nervous character around places Dreems' own character in a better daylight.
Jimmy - artsy and talented as he really is - can't get the artsy girl to want him, while the scumbag pimp manages to do so while he doesn't even care about her. It adds up to the drama of the story, i think that's why the scene is in there.
