Privately owned radio stations not dead

While the corporate monster may have destroyed radio as it once was, it didn't devour it entirely. Small town USA still has radio like it was in the good old days. I live in one such town (Defiance,OH) and we have one station that is virtually commercial free (it advertises local businesses in single 30 seconds segments,,,then back to the music) and plays many of those forgotten songs of the 1964-1985 era as well as the big hits,,,not just the same old stuff that is typical on corporate run outlets. In my travels, I have found a number of radio stations like this. The only problem is the range of such stations is rather limited to 20 miles out or less.

Up until about a few week ago, there was an indy alternative-rock station in the Boston area. Its owners decided to shutdown the terrestrial broadcasts (& go stream-only), after nearly 30 years! wfnx.com

Sadly, the only old school radio feeling I EVER get is from talk radio in general, but most of all, a talk show called "Coast to Coast AM". There are no stations in the Jacksonville Fl area that have anything original to offer at all. The funny thing is, when I first moved here in 94, they had the best radio station ever - 93.3 A1A. Unfortunately by August of 95, they were gone. They played album cuts from Livin On The Fault Line by the Doobies, they would play current stuff by Natalie Merchant, Barenaked Ladies, Del Amitri (who at the time hadn't had a major hit). They played "Aint Even Done With The Night" my fave Mellencamp tune which NEVER gets played anymore, "Crazy" by Icehouse, which nobody remembers. They played album cuts by Billy Joel like Zanzibar and Stilleto. I remember hearing "Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself" by Elton John. The nice thing is they knew what NOT to play. Why play "Only The Lonely" by the Motels, when "Suddenly Last Summer" is infinitely better, and hasn't been played to death? If you've ever heard "In A Daydream" by the Freddy Jones Band, I heard it here all the time, and wouldn't even know of one of the most brilliant songs ever if it weren't for a1a. Instead of playing Cocaine or Layla, they played "Ive Got A Rock N roll Heart" and "Promises" by Clapton. No "Dont Stop" or "Go Your Own way" by Fleetwood Mac, they played "Hypnotized" and "Man Of The World"- truly great tracks. The station was PERFECT, it was exactly what I like - carefully selected album cuts of oldies, and the best of new alternative acoustic rock. I still love classic rock, but can't stand hearing the same 200 songs that EVERY classic rock station plays. How can people listen to these stations and hear the same crap they've been hearing for 30-40 years? I don't get it. If I were to base Zeppelin on the 6 songs they play on the radio, I would hate them - it's not til you hear Bron Yr Aur, Night Flight, Boogie With Stu, Hot Dog, etc. that you get an idea of how great they truly were. It's the same with a lot of other bands, too. We have a new station called Jack 107.3, which is bareable, because they play a wide variety of lesser known stuff from the 70's to current. Still too mainstream for me, but a step in the right direction.

KOCR in Orange County, CA (Newport Beach, I think). They play great stuff, both over the air and streaming. Lots of deep cuts.
