Addicted to Opium?
I read somewhere that some of the cast became addicted to Opium during filming. Has anyone else heard of that? Just curious.

shareWell, John Cazale naturally looked a little strung out, had played a drug addict quite convincingly in Dog Day Afternoon and was dying of cancer during the filming of Deer Hunter. He was definitely ill and I believe he was taking painkillers. All of that probably adds up to a rumor of somebody in the cast getting hooked on the poppy.

"John Cazale naturally looked a little strung out, had played a drug addict quite convincingly in Dog Day Afternoon".
Cazale did not play a drug addict in DDA - in fact, his character actually lectures some of the hostages about polluting their bodies with cigarettes and other substances (prompting a humorous reply by one of the women: "So you rob banks, but keep your body clean, huh?")

For those who saw what you wrote, they'll go away believing a lie.
Thanks for the correction. Drugs weren't even mentioned in DDA, except tobacco.
I know John Savage was a drug addict. I don't think anyone else was on drugs during the shooting of the film... ???
shareThats true about Savage. Deniro has had some problems over the years but he is very quiet about his personal life.

DeNiro's character in "Once Upon A Time in America" gets hooked on Opium. I don't know if people somehow correlate the two or not.
shareI think people say it because of John Cazale. He was very ill when they filmed that movie. John Savage had alot of drug problems back then as well.
