Small town, similar movies

I like the feel of the first half of the movie with the small town, gritty atmosphere.

Similar small town feel in other movies: suggestions?

Thanks.

The Last Picture Show with Jeff Bridges is a similar one

Out of the Furnace also has a gritty, small-town feel to it. Fire Down Below with Steven Seagal tries for a gritty realism also, in between the formulaic fight scenes. I know the atmosphere you're describing and it seems like this has been in a lot of other movies but I can't think of many others right now - The Deer Hunter does it best. As far as TV shows go, Justified on FX had a gritty Kentucky coal-mining-town setting that was done pretty well.

I agree about Justified often having that small town feel but a slightly annoying thing about the show was that the locations jumped between large cities and small towns/rural areas in a sometimes disconcerting way.

Lots of movies filmed in Pittsburgh have that gritty feel to them. I googled and a whole long list came up on wikipedia...

I feel like 'All the Right Moves' with Tom Cruise does a decent job of small town drama, certainly regarding the close-knit aspects of small towns and high school sports, which the film is obviously centered around. It certainly doesn't (can't) have quite the 'bite' that a film involving war-or its effects on people-can, such as The Deer Hunter, but still good in its way.
