Mike's Uniform

Since the three guys served together I presumed they enlisted for 3 or 4 years under some sort of buddy program. I say that because they seemed to have way more training (as evidenced by Mike's uniform medals, badges and patches)than a draftee would receive. If there are any old timer lifers out there I'd like to know what all the stuff on his uniform tells about his service.

Mike was Army Special Forces (Green Berets) the other two are 101st Airborne division.Mike might have been selected or volunteered for Special Forces.but his uniform suggests he was 101st for a time.

Special Forces didn't have tabs back then. They go through the Special Forces. Qualification course today where they earn the Special Forces tab. As you can see mike was with the 5th Special Forces group (Airborne) by the flash on his green Beret. Mike went through Ranger school, in fact the Ranger tab should be above the airborne tab of his special forces flash (patch) on his left shoulder. Rangers were individual companies in Vietnam, also Lrrp teams were active then. Mikes uniform was wrong special forces patch left shoulder representing the unit he serves in ,101st airborne patch right shoulder wich he served for a time in combat. Look at mikes Beret you will see the crossed arrows with the motto De oppresso libre. Wich means liberate or free the oppressed. Mike did not serve in a Ranger company he went to Ranger school a combat leadership course
