Minor Adjustments

I saw this film on opening night back in 1979. I do admire it for a number of reasons, but think it could be better with just a few minor adjustments. We find that the film was about the effects of war on not only three vets, but their friends and family back home. So, why not elude to the war as opposed to showing the scenes of horror in the POW camp and elsewhere. Often times, we find our imagination creating more horror than what was real, so a gifted director could do that. I also would have removed the scenes of Russian roulette. There were no recorded instances of this, so I wouldn't have gone there. I would think it would be just as effective to have Nick go AWOL, become a drug abuser, and then have Michael attempt to rescue him. For examples of what I'm thinking - look at a film called Rolling Thunder with William Devane, or Coming Home with Jon Voight and Bruce Dern. No combat in those films, but the character's relating the events and their scars made them memorable. The Deer Hunter is a good film, but I believe it could be better.
