Can we just say Stephen's middle name is David? That way, it covers up Fran calling him David accidentally at one point. :)

I've easily seen Dawn of the Dead a couple hundred times (over the course of 25 years, mind you), and have never noticed.
Perhaps David was a pet name. Stephen may have been some kind of Goliath slayer.

When Stephen pulls Fran from manning the camera in the first 5 minutes or so of the movie at the TV station. Fran's line just before he says "We've got to survive. Someone has got to survive." Gaylen calls him David when she delivers her line. They kind of cover it up because Fran repeats the line afterwards, but she calls him Stephen then. I believe she says, "David, we can't!" and then repeats it to cover it up, "Stephen, we can't!" She almost said the line correctly, starting with an S sound but says David instead.
I missed it, too, until I saw it in the Goofs section. Or was it Trivia? Anyway, I saw it in my yearly Halloween ritual yesterday and looked for it closely. It is there. I've seen it about a hundred times, too, since 1987. It flew by me, as well. :)
