Lots of people hate on flyboy, but he represents most of us.

I guess he snapped under the pressure, but to be fair his buddy Roger died to secure the mall and they'd been living there for several months so probably felt a real sense of home/ownership over it.
Best plan would have been to stack their hidden warehouse high with every bit of useful stuff, build their wall and only go out to the main mall for exercise and to clear the mind.
No matter how dumb he is still smarter than any of the characters on The Walking Dead
