Sounds like you might have a cut version...
The allegedly uncut 4 hour version I watched began with Bette Davis in the village on "Ploughing Day," then cut to the wife in NYC complaining to her shrink about her husband cheating on her. The film then cut back to Bette Davis saying the house she has up for sale in the village "is not for profit but for whelping a child," then it cuts to NYC with the husband coming on to his wife and telling her that he just quit his cartoonist job to become "a serious painter." Then they argue and insult each other. Their daughter freaks out and screams at them both to shut up. Only then do the couple go to the lawyer to read the will.
