Was he blind and mute or just blind?

I believe the Widow Fortune also cut out his tongue, like Jack Stump the peddler - Before Beth left for the picnic with the others she asked Nick if she'd cut the pieces of his dinner small enough

Having researched this topic about eating without a tongue, I think he was just blinded because he would not have been able to eat anything solid, among other reasons.
