So, why are they hanging from the ceiling?

Never saw the movie, never read the book, don't plan to (though I may catch the mini-series this weekend)--so why are the coma patients hanging from the ceiling?

I was never really sure of that myself, but I am going to venture a guess. Maybe it has to do with bed sores. Since these people are incapable of turning themselves and the institution housing them wants to limit the number of people that work there maybe hanging the patients addresses both issues. I wouldn't want too many people working in a place that was selling organs. They may start asking questions. Plus as long as some of these people have been in comas hanging them is an effective way of dealing with the problem of bed sores which is common when people lay down too long in the same position.

I was thinking the same thing--especially since they're not exactly concerned about these people's comfort, they don't want to damage their "merchandise" in case someone needs a skin graft or whatever. I'm interested in watching the mini-series on A&E this weekend--it's got them hanging, but also in some kind of suit with a giant tube above their abdomens, not like the first movie. Maybe they'll explain it there?

I think they said the wires were supporting them, and also attached to "the long bones". They did mention bed-sores as a reason for the wires. I think, within the movie, that the maximal exposure to the UV rays is beneficial to keep them from any bacterial infections (bed sores.

I guess they are in "suspended" animation.

The devil-nurse woman who gives a tour explains its to prevent bedsores which in real life really is a serious and major issue. Also the wires move like puppet strings to asist circulation. Also they did it with wires for maximum effeciency. They were being warehoused. The devilnurse explains how the wires are a spacesaving economic choice.
