New USA DVD cut? *** possible spoilers ***

I watched the original miniseries in 1978 and I guess it stuck with me all these years because watching the very opening scene on the new DVD tonight I quickly came to feel like there was something missing.

I distinctly remember a graphic scene where Jews are herded into a Polish synagogue, and we then see soldiers methodically shackling the doors shut and setting the temple ablaze. We hear the screams and watch the temple burn for a good several minutes.

However on the new DVD, the opening credits start with the fire well underway. We hear a few screams and see some grieving relatives and that's it.

Has this been cut for the DVD release, or does that scene maybe actually occur later in the program (and is just used in abbreviated form as a background for the opening credits)?

It would be a shame if the more graphic elements (for example, I also remember nudity in the TV showing) were cut and lost forever, because it would lessen the emotional impact and take away some of the value of the min-series as a learning tool.

The time on the DVD is 449 minutes. So if the time on IMDB is right, that's 26 minutes unaccounted for.

Well, I watched part 2 tonight and the scene I was talking about is intact as I remember it. Also in part 2 is some nudity. So I guess it was a false alarm, and the original emotional impact is retained on the new DVD.

I'm not sure how to account for the discrepancy between the 475 minute length claimed for some versions of Holocaust vs the 459 on the new DVD. It can't be explained by, for example, the recaps at the top of each episode, because those are also present on the new DVD.

Maybe a typo somewhere?

So what is the exact running time of the DVD?

Some on this board have said 449 minutes, someone else said 459. Amazon.com says 420. Amazon.co.uk says 431.

(shrug)?

I had the DVD case in my hand when I posted that message. It's 449.

I well remember a scene that didn't make it to the DVD. It's at the end of the war, when the Nazi's are trying to hide traces of what they have done. Uncle Kurt, very sarcastically, tells Erik that a nearby building is filled with bags of hair from Jewish women and someone should burn it. They get into an argument when Kurt says he was worse than Erik because he stood by and did nothing. Erik looks at his uncle and says "I should have had you shot years ago."

Another scene that didn't make the cut on the new DVD: the machinegun-and-grenade ambush of Heydrich's vehicle by partisan fighters. On the new DVD, this assassination attempt is only mentioned through Dorf's discovery of it after Heydrich has been ambushed. The ambush on Heydrich was included in the original NBC airing, as well as the 1978 novelization, which I used to have way back when.

Considering the integral role Heydrich played in the story, it's a shame this villainous character wasn't given a proper send-off. I can't recall if Heydrich's guilt-stricken, deathbed "ravings", over what he and his cohorts had done to the Jews, was featured in the original airing or not (again, it's only described, in the cut DVD, in later dialogue).

I also seem to recall a scene featuring Himmler's foiled escape attempt and capture by the Allies, followed by his suicide, via poison pill.

Yes, I remember those two scenes too. I was only 12-13 at the time but this made-for-tv movie should be seen by teens in schoolrooms now. It would be effective in explaining how recent atrocities, such as in Bosnia and Rwanda happened.

Geeting back to the dvd, I believe they edited the complete mini-series to fit on 3 discs.

I just finished watching Disc 1 Part 1 and went immediately to Part 2. Of course, there was four minutes recapping Part 1. Assuming the other discs have 4 minutes of recaps that would total twenty minutes. If they wanted three discs why couldn't they cut the recaps and keep in the parts mentioned above that have been excised. Does anyone need a recap on something they just saw? On network television, these recaps are fine but on a DVD? I see this on a lot of television series DVDs (although I don't think other edits accompany them). Makes me wonder just how smart the people who put these things together are.

I just received 2 copies of the same set from Amazon. Only required 1. What is the point of that ? I feel I have paid double and been ripped off by Amazon.

Actually the quote is, "I should strangle you as a favor to your father."

I just finished watching the DVD today and that scene is there.

However, the editing on the DVD is very choppy. I haven't seen it in years, so I'm not sure if any scenes are edited out or not.

I haven't seen this since the original broadcast in 1978...I was only 15. "Barely" old enough to watch due to mature content.

Side note: Roots was the first show I was permitted to watch that was "due to a mature matter, parental discretion advised" and I'm white.

Anyway, who cares what the timing is as long as it's all there.

reply

Sadly, I have convinced myself that it *is* cut.

I remember a graphic scene (near the end) on TV where the James Woods character has his hands stomped on. On the DVD we do not see that.

Am I mis-remembering?

reply

because it was so long ago, the version I just watched seemed identical to the original...30 years, its hard to to remember the few minutes
for the seventies, it packed quite a wallop, I was impressed how it held up very well

reply

That is on the second disc, as is the nudity.

However, according to the information at this site, the DVDs are still minus 55 mins.

I just received a copy of the DVD, which I haven't watched yet. But I still have a VHS copy, which includes the whole series on one tape. Was the tape edited to fit, too? I saw the series when it originally aired, but there's been too much water under my mental bridge for me to remember exactly what I saw on NBC.
