Question for Holocaust film buffs

When i was a child i saw parts of what seemed to be a mini series about the Holocaust. As i remember it, it appears to be about one of the very few men who escaped from a death camp.

The story was a flashback from a man who is about to end his life by a rifle. The flashback begins in a getto where the main character stayed away from the nazi's by living on the rooftops. He loses his family when they do get rounded up. He experiences the horror of a concentration camp where he has to bury the bodies of the gass chamber victims.

He escapes by hiding in an empty train leaving the camp and by cutting through a wooden planck with a knife.

Later he also takes part in the ghetto uprising. He survives the war and in the end he loses his family in America by a forrest fire or something bringing him to the point of suicide.

Doe anyone have any idea which series or perhaps movie that was? I also posted this question on the message boards of other Holocaust films/series. sorry about that

I found it: 'For those i loved' is the title

For Those I Loved. Michael York played Martin Gray, the central character

That sounds extremely interesting. I've been studying the Holocaust for years now and am very interested in books & films about the subject I've never heard of before, plus York is one of my favorite actors. I'm going to look that up now.
