DID RUDI WEISS EVER FIND OUT . . . (SPOILERS)

Did Rudi Weiss - the sole survivor of the Weiss family - ever learn the truth about his sister Anna's death? That she didn't really die of pneumonia in a hospital but was murdered upon arrival at the sanitorium? I'm sure he later found out.

reply

Yeah you're right

In the novel, its stated that after the war, he researched the whereabouts of Anna, and did eventually discover that she was gassed

reply

Actually, it was Inga who found out about the so-called sanitarium, and told Rudi after the war. They remained in touch, although Inga eventually moved to England.

reply

Anna was not gassed, she was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. If you'll watch that scene again, you'll see a motor being started after the people are all locked in the outbuilding.

reply

That is the method that four extermination camps used to gas over a million people. It may be different from being killed by hydrogen cyanide poisoning (as the did in Auschwitz), but gassing it is.

reply

I havent read the book but in the film, you dont really know if they found out the truth, you're lead to believe they dont.

reply

True enough, but the book is more in-depth. The movie ends with Rudi agreeing to take some orphans to Palestine. He knows from Inga that his parents and Karl are dead. He can't have known the truth about Anna's death because at that point, Inga didn't know. She only found out what Hadamar really was later on.

The book is narrated from the alternating viewpoints of Rudi and Erik Dorf. It begins with an overview by Rudi, who has remarried and lives in Israel with his wife and two sons. He has spent several years researching and writing a chronicle of the family Weiss, piecing together the story from accounts given by Inga, Kurt Dorf, and others. The book then starts with Karl and Inga's wedding.
