Your first responder was right; the episode about the puppet (well, marionette actually) was "Jungle Man/Mary Ann and Miss Sophisticate" (the marionette fantasy was the second title). Annette Funicello was Mary Ann Carlin, a ventriloquist whose act with her dummy, Valerie, had made her famous. She was afraid that the puppet was trying to control her somehow and wanted to have Valerie brought to life so that she could separate her own personality from the marionette's. The live version of Valerie was played by Maren Jensen.
At the end of the show Valerie was almost in complete control, using Mary Ann as the puppet and making malicious fun of her. Then Mary Ann began to fight back, and it degenerated into an actual physical fight. Roarke came in in the midst of it and turned Valerie back into a marionette, after which Mary Ann laid Valerie on a brazier and set her on fire. Bizarre, kinda creepy (especially the sex scene between Valerie and Mary Ann's fiancé, where you got a feeling of voyeurism!), but a good story all the same. It was from the third season and was first shown on March 8, 1980.
Roddy McDowall made two appearances as Mephistopheles (the devil): "The Devil and Mandy Breem" (season 4, 10/25/1980) costarred Carol Lynley and Adam West. Amanda Breem had sold her soul to Mephistopheles in order to save her husband Philip's life after a near-fatal car wreck, and a year later the devil wanted payment. Roarke helped her get out of it. "The Devil and Mr. Roarke" (season 5, 10/17/1981) had Mephistopheles taking a "vacation" on the island. This time it was Julie who got herself into trouble after begging him to help a friend of hers who was sinking in quicksand. Roarke assisted her out of his trap with the clever part mentioned in an earlier post about selling his soul to Julie before Mephistopheles could claim it! These two shows were among my favorite episodes and I still love watching them (I have nearly the entire series on videotape).
Roddy McDowall appeared in at least one other episode, but not as Mephistopheles. It was before the above-described episodes but I can't immediately remember which one it was. Hope this helps you. :)
