DVD?

Anyone know the deal with this film and it coming out on DVD? I found one site that said it was coming out December 31st 1969 on DVD(?). Amazon has a listing for it says it isn't in print yet. Anybody have any news?

SO wait Febuary 2004 or 05? Any news on features or anything like that?

Let's hope it's WIDESCREEN, at least!

Knowing Fox, they're probably not going to waste their time remixing to 5.1 (good. mono to 5.1 remixes SUCK. Hell, any of you try the VHS on your surround system? Instead of creating good surround fields, they just mix the dialogue in all four channels. Almost as if it WASN'T a real Dolby Surround mix... just that it bleeds badly). But PLEASE, Fox, NO PAN-AND-SCAN! And no cheap transfers, either.

I don't really care about the special features. All I want is this in its original widescreen format on a format that deserves this film, DVD. Quickly! Before my pan-and-scan VHS wears out!

Ralph Bakshi just recorded an audio commentary for the DVD so it may be features heavy. No word yet on weather or not its widescreen, but I think it will be. It'll be out sometime next year.

Audio commentary. Now THERE'S a start!

Just so long as it's in widescreen (no cheap crap. I mean transfer the original theatrical image) and contains the original audio track, I'm completely fine with what else they do with the DVD.

Damn! Why can't MGM just make a widescreen transfer for Heavy Traffic? (just because it's in the not-so-wide 1.66:1 ratio doesn't mean cropping doesn't affect the film. IT DOES. Give more respect for these films, dammit! I mean, seriously, you give widescreen for "Nine Lives of Fritz", but pan-and-scan for this?!)

Now we just need DVDs for "Hey Good Lookin", "Coonskin", and "Fire and Ice". (I don't think I've EVER seen that one on video here)

WHAT WHAT WHAT?! The Man Ralph Bakshi recorded an audio commentary? Where did you hear this? If this is true this is great news...no not great this is EXCELLENT news.

reply

Seems like a rumor to me I dunno. I read somewhere that it will be Widescreen and fullscreen that could have and probally was a joke. Well I sent an e-mail to Ralph Bakshi to confirm the rumours will see what happens.

reply

I guess no one really cares about this thread anymore, but I'll tell everyone what I know. Wizards will be released at the end of the summer according to Ralph Bakshi who did record a commentary for the film.

reply

I care about this thread ... I'm currently in a battle with an @$$hole on eBay who's selling "rare" DVD's of "Wizards," "Light Years," and "Rock 'n Rule," which are really crappy homemade ones he filmed by setting his digital video camera in front of the TV. If anyone wants to start a flame war, his email is [email protected], and his name is John Clemens.

reply

Oh man, people like that are all over e-bay. BTW apparently Rock and Rule is coming to DVD in August or sometime around there. At least that's what I read on some fansite of Rock and Rule. I'd like to read some of the conversations you've had with this guy though, it sounds pretty hillarious.

The Digital Bits just got the announcement from Fox this morning. The features will be a commentary by Ralph Bakshi, an image gallery with 300+ production images, two trailers, a TV spot, and a featurette. The video will be animoprhic widescreen (hooray!) and it will be presented in stereo.

That's excellent news. Especially considering that the last post I read about the DVD's release would be "late summer".

It's gonna be awesome!

2 months till Wizards comes to DVD!

The DVD is due out soon, I don't think they had DVD players in 1969 so don't be disappointed. I think this film is kick -- butt, great entertainment if you have a open mind and are not trying to analyze everything in the film. Many that have posted comments have to much time on their hands to be putting down such a classic. I was a member of a Science Fiction/Fantasy Club that picked 'Wizards' as one of the films we aired at our convention called 'Fool Con' and 'Space Rat film festival' held at JCCC (community college in Overland Park Kansas). The only way to watch this film is on the big screen in my opinion.

reply

Yeah it's comin' in two days. It's gonna be great, I wish I had a big screen TV and all that jazz...but alas I am a poor college student.

Was wondering if anyone else had DVD?
I just got through watching and wanted to see if anyone was able to get the movie to play in original mono? It gave it as an option on screen, but all I could get was stereo.

Anyway I thought the movie was good. Hadn't seen it in a while. You can really see the influence this movie would have on LOTR and Fire and Ice.

I couldn't believe the scathing review that sits atop this thread. It's obvious this guy has never seen any Bakshi before. Wizards is a good animated film and I'm glad I've now got it in my collection.

reply

I liked the DVD a lot. The print they used although not perfect was definately amazing. The commentary and interview were both interesting. Definately happy to have bought it, and for so cheap.

reply

If all you could get was stereo (do you make this conclusion by actually listening to the mono track, or the fact that it's 2 channels?), even while selecting the mono track, it could be that it's just dual-channel mono, and when used with a Dolby Pro-Logic decoder, directs towards the center channel.

I, too, am satisfied with this DVD. It came out beyond expectations. (considering those expectations were movie-only with just a trailer)

I purchased the Region 1 DVD for Wizards at a local FYE store in a shopping mall in Central New Jersey.
