Noisy trash

That is all this film is. I stopped it at 20 minutes, deleted the files, emptied my bin and restarted my computer. Utter garbage this is. Poor dialogue, uninspiring plot, and worst of all... do I even need to say it? Did the goblin record himself dropping pots and pans in the kitchen or something? The people who dig this film might as well dig their own graves right now because in the world that I live in this deserves no praise.

Sounds like quite a depressing world you live in if people aren't allowed to just have fun and watch a film they like. So you think it's trash, understandable, a lot of people say so - but I see no reason why other people shouldn't like it. Anyway, noisy or not, it sure as hell beats all the CGI-injected remakes of old slasher films filling up the 21st century horror box office these days. The digital age has produced far worse than Suspiria unfortunately. 😞

yea, that's true.

I saw it a few years ago on late night TV. They must of cut some of the killings out, but it was pretty boring. I do remember saying, I'm not watching this again. Or maybe, I'm just harder to scare. I don't scare well, if you try to scare me, I'm more likely to hit you, than anything. I really laugh at some horror films. I think they're funny. Especially the Hammer ones

I think a lot of the people who hold this film in such high regard probably watched it at a fairly young age or when it first came out. I have a hard time getting into some older films unless it was something I enjoyed when I was younger. Not all older films, but some. In the horror genre, in particular.

While I can understand this sentiment - it often comes into my head when I watch something for the first time that was so fantastic and new when made, but aped so many times since that it feels tired - but there's just *something* about Suspiria that had me awestruck the entire time. It's an incredible looking film first and foremost, and the stilted acting/dialogue somehow play to it's strengths. With regards to age, I saw it for the first time in my 30s and was glad of it for the sole reason I was able to watch it from an excellent print, on a large screen, with excellent audio played wonderfully loud. I wouldn't have had that choice as a teenager, and the film would've suffered immensely for it.

I can completely understand why it's not for everyone, and thus why fans feel the need to be so defensive about Argento's filmmaking.

I was really hoping that I'd find an OP like this. I'm not here to insult the movie or anyone who likes it (to each his own), but I've tried three different times to get into this and I just can't get through it. I've made it about 25-30 mins in and have to stop it. The music/sound fx overtake any of the dialogue, which wasn't very good from what I could hear, and it just ended up giving me a headache. Sorry everyone, I just don't understand the appeal!

reply

Just because this movie isn't for you doesn't mean it's bad. Do you expect to like every movie?

reply

When did I say that? What are you talking about?

What about this?

reply

Again, where does this comment say the film isn't good?

reply

Then why were you looking for an OP like this to say that you don't understand the appeal for this movie? You even said that people who hold it in high regard were younger when they watched it.

This, combined with the OP calling the movie trash makes it seem like you think the same.

reply

You're grasping at straws, but that's fine.

When I said that bit about people who were young (grew up with it as one of their favorites), I thought people who were defending it the way I've seen them defend it (being hostile, name calling, etc) were fans when it first came out or saw it at a younger age, I was merely pointing out that people get overly offended and defensive when someone is critical of a movie that has sentimental value to them.

I was glad to see someone have the same criticisms (though not the way I'd word them), because I thought this was essential viewing for horror fans and that everyone loved it. So I was surprised to see there was more than one thread started by users who didn't care for it.

I do not think the movie is trash, and I never once said as much in any way, shape or form. You seem bent on looking for an argument that just isn't there.

Hopefully this will convince you that I don't think Suspiria is trash, because I do not, but you don't seem to be able look past your bias of the film and will probably continue to misinterpret my comments.

reply

Nah, it's OK, I just see that your comment was written badly. It's OK, it can happen to anyone.

The cinematography was *beep* brilliant, the soundtrack delivered exactly what it was supposed to do. This movie absolutely nailed atmosphere. Felt like Alice In Wonderland tbh. You're free to not like it, but don't come here and say it's bad because this movie did what it aimed for and the execution was brilliant.

I agree with you 100%. However the story, plot, and character development was rather weak.
