Here is a discussion about whether Suspiria still works as a horror film and film forty years later. Curious what other people think about the discussion and whether the film is still scary.
I didn't watch the podcast you linked, but I can attest that I certainly still find it scary.
I've seen "Suspiria" dozens of times, it's probably my favorite horror film. I watched it, I think, four times this October (that's when I watch it, every October). There are certain scenes where I still jump and even when I know they're coming and I'm expecting them, I'll still jump.
On top of that, though, is just the overall creepy, scary feel of the film, the way it's shot, the sets, it's just spooky as can be.
Saw it for the first time in October, didn't find it scary at all. The sets were nice, the cinematography was amazing, and the music was good, but the story moved so slowly that I almost stopped watching. Maybe if they trimmed its length down a bit, it would have been better. I'm not against slow movies, but I felt like this movie took too long for a whole lot of nothing to happen, which is made worse by the fantastic opening.
Was it ever really scary? Creepy, yeah. I love Suspiria, but it's always felt like a dark fantasy film to me. Hasn't Argento said over the years that he set out to make Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for the 70's?
I thought at the end when Suzy heard Madam Blanc, call her a b****, and talk with Mrs. Tanner about killing her , and Madam Blanc seeking power from Helena Markos. Suzy now knew for sure she was dealing with witchcraft, and they were trying to kill her. I found this disturbing.
I didn't find it especially scary, although towards the end it did get pretty atmospheric and capturing. Ok, it was slightly scary/creepy but only in the end, for me.
