...did you see it in the theater the year it was released?
I was away at camp most of the summer, but I saw it 5 times before school started(I was ten years old starting sixth grade...) Also twice more in the fall for a total of seven(I know math is hard for some folks on this site!)
Once in the theater and once in the drive-in. Yes, those existed back then.
When we went to see it in the theater, the line stretched clear down the block and around the corner. It was a small theater and my friend's brother who took us said, "Not everybody is going to get in." When we came out he said, "That was such an open-ended ending, the villain got away and nobody got the girl, they're setting up for a sequel." My two friends and I hadn't thought of it and looked at him in awe. I am still best friends with the two I accompanied to the theater in 1977. As for the drive-in, I only remember going, I honestly don't remember who I was with.
I was very young and it was hard to sit still. Also even back then going to the movies wasn't that cheap. My parents had better things to do with their time and money. So I only saw it once for the original release.
I remember the line for it. Also we managed to get into the theater as it started because there were seats still available. The rest of the line had to wait for the next show. That was how popular it was in 77.
