Just saw it again and, truth be told, she can actually act! It's a pitty she chose a different path in her career, as she's really a decent actress, certainly no worse than others, who hit it big while she languished in the murky waters of porn. Does anyone know if she played in any other non-adult films?
shareShe didn't chose to keep making porn after Rabid. She tried pursuing a legit acting career, but it just didn't happen, for whatever reason. Maybe the stigma of porn was too much for most producers.
shareWell, Georgina Spelvin managed better. Her performance on "Next Year in Jerusalem" was outstanding. Also Nina Harley's performance on "Boogie Nights"
was pretty decent. Both films were "mainstream" so it was, maybe (just maybe) the fact that she was "stained" (no pun intended) by acting in a film of a major weirdo like David Cronenberg played a role in her disappearance. Consider Deborah Harry of Blondie who vanished after her chilling "mystery lady" performance in the (noteworthy and somewhat prophetic) "Videodrome".
What the hell are you talking about? Nina Hartley's part on Boogie Nights was faking sex and about 10 words of dialogue.

If I recall correctly, we only see Hartley in two or three scenes in Boogie Nights and in each of these she is screwing someone. Not much in the way of acting duties for her.

After a brief flirtation mid-decade with legitimizing porn (and resulting in the highest-budget skinflicks ever made), by decade's end it had passed. No one wanted a porn star in their mainstream flick, no matter how beautiful.
The industry saw that she could act and carry a lead.
They just didn't care.
Probably the same reason Traci Lords career has not progressed as well as it could. People can't see beyond her past.

The only other mainstream film that Marilyn Chambers did, besides Rabid was the low budget spy sex comedy(Rated R) Angel of H.E.A.T.(1983) after her 80's comeback to Porn. Her recent death has saddened us all and she will always be remembered by her fans.

R.I.P. Marilyn Chambers died April 12, 2009 at the age of 56, from an aneurism.
I believe besides Rabid, she was briefly in some movie with Barbara Streisand, the name of which eludes me at the moment & I'm too lazy to look up. She was very pretty and she could act, at least better than some "real" actors can, which is a shame.

And yes, I too think Marilyn could act and her performance in RABID is proof. I feel she could have become a genuine horror/sci-fi cult star and would have indeed improved further had she been given the chance with more mainstream work.
I commend Ivan Reitman for gambling on Marilyn and pushing to have her cast in RABID. It's a pity more producers didn't have his guts to overlook her adult movie past and offer her further legit roles.
I'd say his intuition and faith in her was fully paid off with the performance she gave.
I think she was terrific as Rose in RABID.
And very beautiful too.
And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.
Considering how little was required of her, she did okay I guess. It was quite obvious though she´d have been hopelessly upstaged when confronted with any more complex character than this; a Meryl Streep she clearly wasn´t.

No Meryl Streep, BUT dont assume that anybody actor can do the things Marilyn does in this film. She is very sensous and creates with her dark situation in hand, a touching portrait in a uninhabitated way which you have to Find the right actor to be able to convince us about, in this far fetched sci fi story. Acting is not all about going to "school", you sometimes are required to act in these outragous films and suddenly, even Meryl Streep might show us, she is not the right one.
