NYC?

Several posters have alluded to LFMG as taking place in NYC. I always thought it was Philadelphia. The red light district she frequents is certainly not Times Square and I don't believe any of the other boroughs in NYC have such a concentrated red light district.

Filmed in LA and Chicago per the filming locations section.

If you're referring to the book or the actual woman Roseann Quinn, she lived on the UWS of Manhattan. So I'm assuming the movie was supposed to be set there too.

I went back and watched the scene where there were the coloured lights. The traffic pattern didn't seem right for Times Square. I saw "Country on Rush" and "Faces" and found some old photos of them... They are on Rush Street in Chicago.

You're right. It was filmed in Chicago but was supposed to be New York.

In the scene where she daydreams stepping in front of a car, she is taken to Lenox Hill Hospital (the ambulance is clearly marked with the name). That hospital is on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

The edited in The Lenox Hill footage.

It was shot in Chicago.

I thought the movie had a very Midwestern look and feel. Cleveland cavaliers game on TV, character in a Notre Dame jacket, and so on. The red light district looked nothing like 1970's Times Square. The subway where Theresa is frightened by the nun is also obviously not a New York subway.

The woman whose life this is based on lived in NYC, but I think Brooks deliberately projects the film as being set in Anytown, USA; his way of saying the scenario is universal & could take place anywhere. While I can understand that perspective, I think it's detrimental to the characters & story that it clearly doesn't take place anywhere specific, making it less sympathetic & identifiable instead of more. 
