Something nice happened in the theater at the end of this

Saw the movie in 1977. The movie was real good,story well written,and well acted. The nice thing that happened at the end when Elliot told her not to get his gutiar wet during the rain. When David Gates started the final song,and the final credits started rolling across the screen...Everyone,and I mean everyone in the theater stood up,and applauded !!! When have you ever seen that happen ? I saw the Remake and it just didn't have the "timing" this one had.

It is a really great ending. That's neat what happened at the theater - I don't think I've ever seen something like that.

Things aren't always what they seem; there are other possible explanations for that reaction...

1. They were high from drinking or taking drugs.

2. They were happy that the movie finally ended.

3. The movie was over so they were standing to leave.

4. Some had a strong need to fit in with the crowd.

5. You could not see all the people who remained seated.

6. You happened to stumble into a private screening. Audience members were connected to the movie in some way so they were applauding themselves or their family member.

Wow, that's cool! I was at a 2007 showing of the documentary The King of Kong, which had an amazing hero/villain storyline that got nearly everybody standing and cheering as the credits rolled (it gave me goosebumps). My IMBd signature line is even a quote from that movie.

Cinematic experiences have certainly changed now that we're inundated with so many films per month, especially of the superhero genre in recent years. In addition, a growing number of people stay home with Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. However, occasionally, a theater movie will have many people clapping at the end. It just doesn't happen as often anymore. 

In the opening scenes of The Canonball Run, but that's more of a California thing. And when Vader tosses the Emperor into the furnace in Return of the Jedi.

Here's my experience with the first time: I was a teenager in 1977, head over heels in love. We went to almost every movie that came out. The song was a huge hit, and I looked forward to seeing this flick with her like crazy. How could she not fall totally in love with me when the credits rolled, I figured? She had to go on some family trip for a few days, but promised that we'd see it as soon as she got back. A few days later, I went to see her, and said, "C'mon, finally we can see the Goodbye Girl." "Oh", she said, "I saw it with some friends while I was gone". Ouch. I went to see it by myself that night. Fast forward 35 years and it comes on TV. I tell my wife I want to watch it, without, of course, telling her this story. She wasn't much impressed. Said it was too dated. I, on the other hand, cried (again) at the end. Whether due to lost love or lost youth, I'm not sure. Probably both.
