Barbra Streisand, Ali McGraw

Trivia section says they were chosen over Sandra Locke. Somehow I can't picture these two in the Gus character. I know AM has done nude scenes before and that may not have been the deciding factor in her refusal to do the film. BS had recently done A Star is Born with a nude scene so she wasn't averse to these scenes, either.

Did each feel this movie could hurt their careers? Only they know.

I think the near-gang rape scene was probably pretty shocking for mainstream audiences in 1977. It may have influenced the other actresses not to take the role.

I doubt it, it wasn't much of a scene and could have been written much better, or eliminated with no loss to the story

You don't have to stand tall, but you have to stand up!

Because Clint was laying the meat pipe to Locke, plain and simple. The studio wanted BS or AM and made Clint take a look at them hoping he would see something to change his mind, but nope, he was dead set on Locke.

Good point, Chuck.

Plus, Locke would work for peanuts vs other two wouldn't come cheap.

Studios always want to use the biggest stars of an era that they can afford, and both Streisand and MacGraw were big box office at the time. It doesn't mean they were right for this particular role in any way, it just means the studio hoped to see them on the marquee, to sell tickets.

Streisand was offered practically EVERY role in the 1970s...including the mom in The Exorcist (!!)
