6.0 rating?? That's just too low.

This film has all kinds of goodies about it. I thought sure after watching it today I'd come here and find it rated somewhere near a 7 or maybe even 8.

I mean come on - fantastic diving footage, great story, John Barry score, Shaw, treasure, drug trade, HOT babe, explosions, weapons, sharks, drinking, fights ....

What more can we ask for??

The 6.0 rating only covers the hard nipples under the see through wet tee shirt scene only...most everything else has been forgotten!

I agree with you, it's an all round great movie. IMDB ratings are calculated on a strange curve. If you give it an "8" it gets more weight than if you rate it a "9".

I think 6 covers the amazing underwater cinematography, great direction, great cast, overall production quality. The 4 points are missing because there's no one to root for, because all characters in this are driven by greed. They're in no danger once they stop searching for treasure and go home and live normal lives.

If only this movie had a better story to it.

It only has 17k ratings, whilst on Letterboxd it only has 3.5k. It's a largely forgotten film, younger viewers aren't flocking to check films like this out. Thus the ratings are of little relevance, there is undeniably many fans of this film whom are unaccounted for.

It was a big hit back in 1977, earning $231 million (by 2022 standards, adjusted for inflation) domestically.

It's similar to films like King Kong (1976) and The Amityville Horror (1979). Big hits of their time that have little ratings on sites like IMDB. TAH was the second highest grossing film of 1979, earning by 2022 standards $352 million domestically. Yet it only has 40k ratings on IMDB, which is only 3k more than Phantasm (1979).

Even recently, Hereditary (2018) has over twice the votes of The Nun (2018), which earned 4.5x the amount at the box office.

Raters on sites like IMDB are their own little thing, a small committee.
