Pinocchio and Roy

Many talking about the aliens implanted Roy the desire to leave earth, probably for good, I believe it's only half true. There is no doubt that they used their technologies to control people state of mind but I believe that this control has a certain limit. There is a speculation, which I don't know if it is true but it's help me to prove my point, that only people with a certain personality structure can be hypnotized. In other words, there's something about Roy desires, ambitions and dreams that make him more attentive to the aliens manipulations and I think Spielberg hints at that throughout the film.

One of the clues in the film is Pinocchio.
In the beginning of the film (actually the first time we seen Roy) Roy try to convince his children to go watch Pinocchio because he "grew up with Pinocchio". I don't believe it's a coincidence.

Pinocchio story is about his attempts to feel human as possible. The same we can said about Roy. Both Pinocchio and Roy go through hardships to feel alive. Both are going through a crisis before they fulfill their dreams. Not less important, they both do this by go behind their own reality.

I also see a connection between Geppetto carving the pine tree to build a wooden doll to Roy creates a model of a mountain. Maybe this's also reference to Pinocchio.

In summary, the aliens only stimulate something that was already there.
